THE FARRINGDON LATE SUMMER SHOW

This was the first time we have had a show so late in the year and we wondered how many entries we would have. We did not need to worry as it turned out most classes were well filled.

THE JUDGES

Mr John Negus (well-known judge and journalist); Vegetables and Flower Classes.

Mrs P Wedderburn-Maxwell; Homecraft.

Mrs A Appleby; Handicraft and Children Classes.

All the Judges were impressed with the standard of the exhibits. The church looked lovely and we thank Rev Tony and the churchwardens, Ann and Andrew, for allowing us to use it.

THE VEGETABLE CLASSES

These were hotly contested with David Horton winning most points and Nick Rowe coming a close second. Nick also won the Brian Williams Cup in the “any other” vegetable class.

THE FLOWER CLASSES

These were won by Cally Horton.

FLORAL ART

This class was won by Mo Biggs

HOMECRAFT

So many entries that we nearly ran out of space, the overall winner was Mark Westcott.

HANDICRAFT

Very diverse entries showing just how talented some of you are, the winner was Mo Biggs.

CHILDRENS CLASSES

Alice and Pippa Rowe were joint winners, they were very excited to win again with their splendid entries.

The only disappointment of the day was that there were so few children… come on you mums and dads let your children show us what they can do!

Teas and delicious homemade cakes were very popular(we nearly ran out of cakes).

The 59’er was won by Alex Roe.

As Chairman I would like to thank the committee for their hard work for the smooth running of the show and to all who helped with the heavy tables and serving the refreshments.

All round it was a very successful event in what has been a very successful year for the society.

VILLAGE OPEN GARDENS

The morning of the 15th August dawned overcast & drizzly but promised better weather to come. It turned out to be an ideal day for visiting gardens, not to hot. The 10 gardens were ready and waiting for visitors. At opening time (2.00pm) the first customers were queuing up outside and plant sales were already doing a brisk trade. As the afternoon went on more and more people arrived eager to see the gardens and talk to the owners. Over 300 people.

Firstly, a huge thank you to the 10 garden owners who opened their gates. Lots of hard work goes on before the big day so I hope that you enjoyed the day.

Next thank you to everyone who helped man the gates, donated cakes, served teas, sell plants and put-up posters around the area prior to the event, your involvement was very much appreciated.

Lastly to the rest of the village residents for your patience with all the people and cars, I hope that it didn’t inconvenience your Sunday afternoon too much. The village has not been so busy for a long time.

The “History of Farringdon” Art Show staged and organised by Tim Charrington in the church added to the day. Many visitors said they found it most interesting.

Due to Covid restrictions we had little time to put the whole event together and were delighted with the amount of money raised. Tickets and teas raised £2201.00. Alex Roe sold his Gold Medal winning marmalade and donated the amazing sum of £400.00 to The Brain Tumour Society. Sally and Martin Burr donated £211.00 to Marie Curie from the plant stall at Berry Cottage. Steph and Carol Steele donated £25.00 from the plants sold at Railway Cottage to the society.

The final amount raised from the day came to £2,812.00.

Thank you all for making a day to remember.

FARRINGDON OPEN GARDENS 2021

On Sunday 15th August, we are organising an open gardens event, 2:00 – 5:30pm.

There will be ten gardens open, two of which open regularly for NGS. The gardens reflect a variety of sizes and styles. Teas will be for sale together with plants and homemade marmalade. In addition there will be an art exhibition in the church together with an historical display about the village (open 2:00 – 5:00).

Entry programmes are available at all the gardens that are open. The charge is £5 per adult; this covers the cost of access to all the gardens. Children under the age of 16 are free of charge. Well behaved dogs on short leads are welcomed. The majority of the gardens are wheelchair accessible.

Also during lockdown a group of villagers have been working hard to redevelop an old children’s playground into a Village Garden. On the 15th at 1:30 it will be officially opened by Tim Charrington.  Spend some time exploring the garden or sitting in this tranquil area.

Please come along and support us, enjoy a stroll around the diverse gardens, sample the food, look around the ancient church and buy some lovely plants.

We hope to see you on 15th August.
