Our society has been an important part of village life in Farringdon since the 1890’s. At this time meetings and shows were held in The Golden Pheasant ( was The Royal Oak), until Massey’s Folly was completed in the 1920’s.
In the past, Masseys Folley was the centre of so many activities and events that took place in the village.
The annual Flower Show was the main social event of the year and everyone was involved.
The W.I. provided teas and cakes. There were a variety of games and activities for all the family and in the evening people enjoyed a bar-b-que and barn dance.
Originally, entries for the show were only accepted from the paid gardeners that the more wealthy villagers employed.
These gardeners competed fiercely with each other across the neighboring villages and towns.
It was in the late 1950’s that the show became open for anyone to enter, although there were two distinct divisions for “the gardeners” and “the cottagers”.
Over the years the planning and organisation of the society was carried out by a small committee of villagers, as it is today.
The activities and events that take place have grown and now include, Open Gardens (biannually), the Spring and Summer Shows, a variety of organised trips to gardens and places of interest, talks from guest speakers, plant sales and quiz nights. Membership offers access to the above events and in addition an annual trip to Wisley together with other specially organised activities. Members also have a 10% discount from Garthowen Garden Centre.
Our Spring Show also includes floral entries, craft and cookery sections. The Summer Show is more extensive and in addition, there are classes for fruit, vegetables, jams and preserves. We always welcome entries from local children. We hope there is something for everyone – you don’t have to be a gardener to enter. It is all good fun.
All our events are published in the monthly village magazine, and posted on Farringdon net (firstname.lastname@example.org) as well as on this site.
We are a friendly group of people that welcome any new villagers to come along and join in with our activities. As a committee we are always pleased if people want to make additional commitment to joining the committee or helping with the organisation of specific events. Due to the lack of a village hall, we currently hold our shows in All Saints Church. This has been an attractive venue and proved a great success.
Please don’t think we are all a group of highly knowledgeable gardeners, (although some are), most of us still have a great deal to learn. Above all, we thoroughly enjoy our gardens – large or small, happy to give advice where we can and are committed to supporting the growth of our society in Farringdon.
